'Amazing Spider-Man 2' Adds Yet Another Foe for Peter Parker

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 already has a busy cast, and it just keeps getting busier. Considering who the filmmakers are adding, though, we can't complain too much. It's just been revealed that Chris Cooper will be playing Norman Osborn, the brilliant billionaire madman who eventually becomes the Green Goblin.

Now before you start thinking that Electro (Jamie Foxx) and the Rhino (Paul Giamatti) and now the Green Goblin makes for too many villains, note that Variety's news doesn't say that the Goblin will be appearing in the second film, only that Norman Osborn will. Director Marc Webb could very well be treating Osborn much as he did in the first film: as an ominous figure whose larger-than-life presence is felt everywhere, but isn't necessarily an active player in the story. Except this time around, instead of hiding the uncast character's face in the shadows, Webb will have one of the finest actors on the planet to bring him front and center.

If they go that route, that will no doubt set up the Green Goblin as the potential villain for the third film. But considering they only recently started filming the second one, we honestly don't even want to know how Osborn fits into a third movie at this point. Even if his role is relatively tiny in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, we're just happy to see Chris Cooper appear in a Hollywood blockbuster. Plus, if anyone could make for a more memorable Norman Osborn than Willem Dafoe in Sam Raimi's film, it's Cooper.
