The Bandito Brothers, the production team who brought us the Navy SEAL-based action film Act of Valor, are back with a new project – a sci-fi action piece entitled The Prototype. We’ve got the first proof-of-concept trailer for the project, a clip that’s apparently generating lots of buzz in Hollywood (if Deadline is to be believed).

The flashy proof of concept highlights a story about people evolving into machines and a humanoid government robot who goes rogue. People are already comparing it to District 9 (which feels like a bit of a stretch, honestly) and saying the robot humanoid looks like something out of I, Robot. Collider’s Dave Trumbore mentions that the character reminds him of a robotic version of Hellboy’s Abe Sapien – which is pretty spot on. The whole thing sort of reminiscent of the PlayStation 3 game Prototype, although this film is not based on that title.

Andrew Will is handling the writing and directing duties on the project, which features performances from Neal McDonough, Joseph Mawle, and Anna Anissimova.

The Prototype hasn’t procured distribution yet, but that should change in the very near future. Deadline reports that an auction for the rights was scheduled for after the 4th of July holiday, but with the trailer debuting now – and the resultant buzz – that could very well be moved up. We’ll bring you more on The Prototype as details emerge. Until then, check out the trailer and let us know if it strikes a chord with you.
