ESPN’s 30 for 30 documentary series does a great job of taking you behind the scenes of classic sports events and issues – and now it has (sort of) turned its attention to one of the biggest basketball games of the past two decades. That’s right – the Monstars vs. the Toon Squad battle for intergalactic supremacy in Space Jam is finally the subject of its own documentary.
OK, so it’s more of a mockumentary than a real film – and it was made by the guys behind Yahoo’s web series SketchY and not the crew at ESPN headquarters -- but I’ll be damned if they don’t nail the tone of your typical 30 for 30 episode.
Bringing together former players, sportswriters and some of the game’s actual participants (sadly, no one managed to get Michael Jordan or Bill Murray to contribute), this look back at one of the most important basketball games in the history of the sport will tug at your heartstrings (we’ll miss you, Foghorn Leghorn) while lifting your spirits as Jordan and the Loony Tunes gang rise in the face of adversity.
Seriously, just watch this thing – it’s hilarious, and better than anything that was actually in Space Jam.
