2013 Golden Globe Nominations: 'Django Unchained,' 'Argo' and 'Lincoln' Lead the Pack

2013 Golden Globe Nominations: 'Django Unchained,' 'Argo' and 'Lincoln' Lead the Pack

Dec 13, 2012

The 70th Golden Globe nominations were handed out this morning, giving us yet another look at which films and performances have scratched their way to the front of the pack in search of that all-too-important Oscar statue. The Globes are a bit lighter and not as serious as the Oscars, with all the voting coming from the Hollywood Foreign Press. The plus side to that is recognition for comedy and musicals, but the downside is that quite often the HFPA is criticized for voting with red-carpet photos in mind and not for which is truly the best film. Whether that's the case this year is up to you.

If you're looking for major surprises, you'll find them in Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. The film, which hasn't been part of any awards conversations up until now, was nominated for Best Picture (Comedy/Musical) and also picked up nods for Best Actor (Ewan McGregor) and Best Actress (Emily Bunt). Also, following her SAG nod yesterday, there's Nicole Kidman again with another nod for The Paperboy, a performance (and movie) that was openly mocked by many critics.

Hunger Games fans will be happy to see their film get a nod for Best Song, "Safe & Sound" from Taylor Swift. Also good to see Jack Black get some recognition for Bernie, and while The Master was shut out of the big Best Picture and Best Director categories, it did pick up nods for its amazing cast, with Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams and Philip Seymour Hoffman all receiving nominations.

As far as major snubs, there aren't many. Much of what we see here was expected. Sad to see ParaNorman not get an animation nod, and if Skyfall was shut out from the foreign press (save for Best Song), that doesn't look good come Oscar time.  Also, the year's two most ambitious movies -- Beasts of the Southern Wild and Cloud Atlas -- were all but shut out, save for a Best Score nod for the latter. Let us know your thoughts below.
