12 Monkeys SyFy

It might seem odd to turn a cult sci-fi film like 12 Monkeys into a television series, but that’s what Syfy will be attempting to do when the first episodes of the new show debut this January. We’ve got your first trailer for the adaptation of Terry Gilliam’s film below, and it looks pretty good.

Writers Travis Fickett and Terry Matalas promise the show (which will feature 13 episodes) won’t be just a rehash of the original film. “I think it’s a complete sort of reimagining. We were all very, very big fans of the original film and had a deep love and respect for that material. So we didn’t want to just redo what the movie does. We changed the rules.”

The writers won’t reveal in any great detail how they’ve changed these rules, but the basic premise of the show appears the same as the film: "A man is sent back in time from a future decimated by a viral outbreak with the hopes he can stop it from happening and save humanity.”

Bruce Willis played the lead character in the 1995 film, while Aaron Stanford will re-create the role for the small screen.

Syfy is betting on the show appealing to both fans of the original film, plus a new generation of viewers who never saw it. That’s not always easy to pull off (invariably networks and studios wind up alienating one group or the other somewhere along the line), but Syfy appears to have a legitimate shot at making it work based on what we’ve seen in this clip. Check it out above and let us know what you think.
