The Movie Watcher - Dave White: Your Man at the Multiplex

Last Holiday

Movie Info and Showtimes Sep. 16, 2008

Last Holiday Grade: B-
Who's in It: Queen Latifah, LL Cool J, Timothy Hutton

The Basics: Queen Latifah thinks she has three weeks to live, so she runs off to an eastern European hotel where the rooms cost $4,000 a night. In fact, she does every single thing on the Tim McGraw checklist except spend eight seconds on a bull named Fu Manchu.

What's the Deal? There are movies in this life that exist between the usual boundaries of good and bad. They are the Cute Comedies, the kind that as an adult you end up going to see with your retired parents. When it's over and you ask, "Did you like the movie?" your mom will go, "Yes, that was cute." Then you all go eat at Cheesecake Factory. This is that kind of movie. It's funny enough, it's sweet enough, it's got enough sassy Queen Latifah moments to remind you that she's Queen Latifah© and it doesn't make you want to run screaming from its dopiness.

It's a Remake: It was a British movie from 1950, also called Last Holiday, and it starred way pre-Obi Wan Alec Guinness as this guy named George Bird (Latifah's name in this version is Georgia Byrd) who thinks he's dying. The big difference — and here comes a sort of spoiler — is that in the last scene of that one, he gets hit by a bus instead of running off with LL Cool J. Oh, like you thought maybe Latifah was going to bite it at the end of this one?

Your Arms Too Short to Box With God: Latifah has an ongoing conversation with the lord. And here are a few of the movie's adorable theological assertions:
1. God lives in the sky at all times.
2. God likes to trick people with fake terminal illness.
3. God likes to cause avalanches to inconvenience people in fancy hotels.

Percentage of the Movie That Timothy Hutton, Who Plays a Corporate Bad Person, Runs Around Acting and Looking Generally Weird, Including Having an Awful Haircut and Wearing Ill-Advised Black Tank Tops That Show Off His Wiry Little Body: 20.
