Who's in It: Isabel Dolores Hernández, José Guadalupe Calzada, Agustín Zárate Centeno, Natividad Sánchez Montes
The Basics: In the whole world of possible movies you could be spending your time on, I know that a documentary about the construction of a freeway in Mexico City doesn't seem like something that screams, "Oh, yes! Watch me!" But I promise you if you do, you won't regret it. It's fascinating and, I know this is a weird word to use, kind of beautiful, too.
What's the Deal? You drive past freeway construction all the time if you live in a reasonably large city, but unless you're five years old and really into those big construction equipment DVDs they make for kids, you probably don't think about who works there or why or what they're doing. This movie takes you there, and you see how the guys on the site treat each other like an oversize family, discussing what they think about work, their lives, the future, sex, everything except the construction of a freeway, as a matter of fact.
Favorite Employee the Drunk Guy: OK, I don't know if he's drunk on the job or not, but he's definitely the sort who would be. He's the guy who gay-baits other workers the most, happily insults everyone he crosses paths with and cheers, "Let's go to Hell!" with a grin on his face when he starts work.
Next Favorite Employees a Tie: It's between the long-haired cowboy who wants to quit and raise cattle and the guy who seemingly does nothing all day but look down on passing cars below so he can catch a glimpse of women who might be flashing their panties. They're both kind of rad.
The Person No One Wants to Have a Conversation With: A woman who works on the site and talks about nothing but death and demons and how people who die on construction sites fertilize the project and their souls are payment to the devil. So, yeah, she's fun.
Best Ending Nominee, 2007: This isn't really a spoiler because there's not a real story to spoil, but the movie ends with a six-minute uninterrupted helicopter shot of the freeway and the workers, and it's really fantastic to look at.
