Georges Sand (Aurore Dupin, Baronne Dudevant:1804-76) was a noblewoman who broke new ground for women in the 19th century. She was a sensuous woman, a great novelist, and a devoted mother. She fought ferociously (and largely successfully) to maintain her independence from men.
