FULL SYNOPSIS

In 1983, Frank Garcia had a brief fling with fame as a member of the pop group OXO, who scored a major hit single with the song "Whirly Girl". During his annus mirabilis, Frank met and married Cynthia Brown, a would-be model who was convinced she was hitching her wagon to a star. However, OXO's success was short lived, and Frank's career never picked up again after it went off track. Twenty-two years later, Frank is an overweight, beer-swilling loser who can't seem to hold down a job while his wife Cindy tries to keep the bills paid while bitterly bickering with her spouse and periodically encouraging him to give his musical career another chance. Frank and Cindy's son G.J. was sent off to live with his grandparents when he was young -- the grandparents felt Frank and Cindy were not fit parents -- and years later, G.J. Echternkamp is a budding filmmaker who has decided to make a film about his unusual family. Frank and Cindy is a documentary about one wildly dysfunctional relationship, a son trying to come to terms with his eccentric parents, and a fable about what can happen when expectations run head first into reality. Frank and Cindy was screened in competition at the 2007 Silverdocs Film Festival, a festival for documentary cinema sponsored in part by the American Film Institute. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
