Four Chapters Details

Both love and faith pose profound dilemmas for a young man during a time of political upheaval in this drama from filmmaker Suman Mukhopadhyay. Sachish (Subrata Dutta) is a college student living in Calcutta who struggles to come to terms with his conflicted feelings about politics and religion during the early years of the Twentieth Century. Sachish has come to respect the rationalism followed by his uncle (Dhritiman Chaterji), and at first he embraces radical positivism as he dreams of making Bengal into a more just and equal nation. However, the death of Sachish's uncle throws him into an emotional turmoil which only grows deeper when he falls in love with two different women. Nanibala was having an affair with Sachish's brother, and he feels the need to help her regain respectability. At the same time, Sachish is also attracted to Damini (Rituparna Sengupta), a beautiful widow. As it becomes clear that Damini cannot fully return Sachish's affections, he begins to turn away from rationalism toward a religious mysticism that allows him to accept love in a higher form not bound by earthly sensuality. Adapted from a novel by Rabindranath Tagore, Chaturanga (aka Four Chapters) received its North American premiere at the 2008 Montreal World Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Grand Prix des Ameriques. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
