The Movie Watcher - Dave White: Your Man at the Multiplex

Finishing the Game

Movie Info and Showtimes Sep. 16, 2008

Finishing the Game Grade: D
Who's in It: Roger Fan, Sung Kang, James Franco, McCaleb Burnett, Jim Parrack, Dustin Nguyen, Cassidy Freeman, M.C. Hammer

The Basics: Remember how Ed Wood finished Plan Nine From Outer Space after Bela Lugosi died midway through the shoot? He got a new actor and had the guy hide his face behind a cape for the rest of the filming. Yes, that really happened. So here's a mockumentary about what would have happened if someone had tried to do the same thing with Bruce Lee's last known footage. Wait, did I lose you at mockumentary? Because that's kind of where that should have happened. So don't blame me if you actually go watch this thing.

What's the Deal? There may be nothing in movies sadder than a comedy where the jokes have all been told before — and better — somewhere else. And there's no more played-out genre than the comic faux-documentary. You can blame Grey Gardens for the unintentional beginnings of this (even though it was a real documentary), and no one's done more to make it seem effortless than Christopher Guest. But here's a secret: IT'S NOT AS EASY AS IT LOOKS. And this anti-funny film is the proof.

Because That '70s Show Didn't Mine This Sort of Thing Nearly Enough: There are actually vintage clothes used as gags in this film. And people with funny Asian names. And goofs on how martial arts films are badly dubbed into English. And blaxploitation guys with giant afros who are supposed to be funny just by virtue of their presence.

Worst of All: Hammer is in it. Acting. Method and Red were busy shooting How High 2, I guess.

For Fans Of: Kung Pow: Enter the Fist.
