And she did it again with another foreign icon, the former British prime minister. World leaders are a special difficulty because they’re so globally and publicly familiar and they’ve typically been lampooned more than normal celebrities. Yet, by being an American, Streep may have had either a greater challenge or a greater benefit in not living where she would have been as inundated with Thatcher’s image on a regular basis. She wound up with her third Academy Award win as a result.
