Love it or hate it, Eli Roth’s chilling Euro-set horror film may have, along with Saw, spawned a host of inferior so-called “torture porn” movies, but it’s shrewder than that implies. It’s also pretty damned sleazy, gory and shocking, but as an ode to 70s Euro, and modern Asian, horror, it resonated with the genre’s harder-stomached fans long after its January 2006 release. And heck, who will backpack across Europe quite the same way again? Followed by an even more exploitative theatrical sequel, as well as a recently-released straight-to-video sequel.
