8 Great ... Comedic Heist Movies

One of the all-time great comedy capers stars Robert Redford as Johnny Hooker, a small-time hood with a vendetta against big-time gangster Doyle Lonnegan (Robert Shaw). Hooker teams up with confidence man Henry Gondorff (Paul Newman), and the con, as they say, is on, involving fake gambling parlors, nosy cops, double- and triple-crosses, and a talented team of grifters (including Ray Walston, Harold Gould and Eileen Brennan). This nostalgia-tinged farce — set in the 1930s, with Marvin Hamlisch’s score channeling the Scott Joplin rags of the 1890s — was such perfect escapism for the Watergate-plagued audiences of 1973 that it snagged a Best Picture Oscar.
