The Avengers, Vol. 1 #1-16

If you really want to know what all the fuss is about with The Avengers, you should go back to where it all started with Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's very first story arc, which united a group of previously solo heroes into what would become one of comics' greatest superhero teams. The first 16 issues of the series (which have been collected in various forms over the years, so they should be easy to locate) not only bring the team together to fight a rampaging Hulk – who ends up being under the influence of Loki's trickster magic – but the fourth issue features the team dredging up Captain America's frozen corpse. The final issue in this arc has much of the original roster departing, only to be replaced with a new crop of heroes that includes the Avengers' famous archer, Hawkeye. The rest, as they say, is history.
