Critics' Corner: The Best, Worst and Most Overlooked Movies of 2012 (So Far)

Worst Example of Stars Getting to Call the Shots: Joyful Noise

You know who’s made a couple of not-bad movies? Director Todd Graff. Specifically, he directed Camp and Bandslam and, like this one wishes it could be, they were about young people obsessed with music in a way that clearly reflected the filmmaker’s own obsessions. But Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton decided that he was just their hired hand and that this one would be about them instead of his leftfield ideas about songs and life. As vanity projects go, it’s a not even a great example of exuberantly stupid, nonsensical hubris. It’s just a typical. Worse, even the catfights are dull and involve Dolly half-heartedly throwing biscuits at Latifah. Biscuits. - DW
