Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)

After the slow, piercing disappointment of the first big-screen adventure, the sequel ramped up the action and reintroduced a scintillating villain from the original TV show. The tone got dark in a hurry, with a beloved cast member suffering excruciating pain, and nearly everyone placed in deadly serious peril, resolved only when one character unselfishly followed the dictates of logic: "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few... or the one."
