The Best and Worst Movie Teachers

Jaime Escalante -- Stand and Deliver

Edward James Olmos received a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his portrayal of math teacher Jaime Escalante in the 1988 film Stand and Deliver. Escalante, a real-life teacher, worked diligently to teach calculus to a group of at-risk students in Los Angeles. Escalante is hard, but fair, and eventually his students warm to his methods and begin to achieve in a subject no on gave them a shot at mastering. We find ourselves wishing we’d had an instructor like this in high school because there’s no way we’d pass calculus otherwise. (Verdict: Good Teacher)
