Even the “practically perfect” Mary Poppins must survive the trauma of being a teenager in Pretty in Poplin. While the Banks children would later soak up her know-it-all primness, children her own age couldn't stand her, except for her handsome, if shiftless, classmate Bert. Worse, young Mary must come to terms with her rootless, minimum wage future.

Imagine being raised to be smart, independent and efficient—and then realizing that because of the strict social codes of 1910 England, your only career options as a magical middle-class woman are magical wife, magical nanny or magical hooker.
