After Leonard Nimoy successfully helmed Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, the story goes that William Shatner wanted a crack at directing. So we have Mr. Shatner to thank for the most unintentionally funny installment of the series, one that theoretically explores an important issue (God and his place in a science-fiction universe) but does so in the most vapid manner possible, with lackluster performances and colorless, often incompetent direction by Shatner.
