Stallone has become well established for big, brazen action flicks as well as supremely cheesy action comedies. One genre in which he does not seem to spend a great deal of time is drama. This has lead to the misconception that Stallone is not a great actor. Enter Cop Land. James Mangold’s vastly underrated corrupt cop opus costars the likes of Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, and Harvey Keitel. Stallone plays the sheriff of a small New Jersey community that has become the de facto harbor for crooked cops; his allegiances eventually placed at odds with his sense of duty. Stallone’s understated, heartbreaking performance is one of the film’s greatest strengths.
