Best Space Mission Movies: From Planetary Demolition Crews to Hellish Black Holes and Beyond

John Carpenter's first major film is fairly wacky (the alien that runs amok on the ship is basically a spray-painted beach ball), but that's largely all intention in this sci-fi comedy written by Dan O'Bannon (who later wrote Alien). Silliness aside, the crew of the Dark Star are tasked with scouting the stars, finding planets that may threaten future human space colonies and blowing them up. And while a planetary demolition crew sounds like it should make for an intense sci-fi film, what makes Dark Star so great is they've all been on the mission so long it's become boring work to them. Until one of their bombs becomes sentient and refuses to blow up a planet, that is.
