Months before Adrien Brody kissed a surprised Halle Berry after winning the Academy Award for Best Actor, The Pianist won the top prize at Cannes, starting a surge of support for the film, Brody, and director Roman Polanski, who was and remains a controversial figure. Polanski was out of favor with most critics at that point, but the favorable buzz from Cannes helped turn the tide, and led to his win in absentia at the Oscars.
