Robert Florey had designs to direct Frankenstein for Universal Pictures, and even wrote a treatment for his vision. Though that job ultimately went to James Whale, Florey got his chance to translate German expressionism into Hollywood style by adapting Poe’s story, with Bela Lugosi as star. The film is a visual feast, but has little in common with Poe’s original work, which broke ground as the first true detective story in fiction.
