What can you say about Casablanca that hasn’t already been immortalized in a thousand film school textbooks? Purely and simply one of the absolute best feats of cinema since the inception of the art form. As tough and impossibly cool as is Bogart’s Rick, a paradigm of manliness to this day, I still find myself getting choked up when he makes his great sacrifice; letting Ilsa go for her sake and the greater good despite how much he desperately loves her. All the hallmarks of great cinema are present leading to the moment wherein he utters, “here’s looking at you, kid.”
