It’s not uncommon to see the nude female form used as an image of vulnerability, especially in the shower, but in David Cronenberg’s 2007 film, Viggo Mortensen becomes the image of nude helplessness. Attacked in a public bath, Mortensen’s nude Nikolai is beaten and thrown about the room, with large, clothed men standing over his bleeding and seemingly helpless body until Nikolai begins to fight back. But even after the battle, there’s still a sense of uncomfortable, pained exposure. Instead of dominance, sexual conquest, or the increasingly popular comedic full-frontal, Nikolai’s form is battered and pained.
