"The dragon is hungry," Fr. Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman) says of his colleague, Sr. Aloysius (Meryl Streep) after the Catholic grade school principal cruelly rips into one of her students for a minor offense. But who, indeed, is the real dragon? Sr. Aloysius will clip a kid's ear or terrorize the bejesus out of any classroom just by entering it – and she single-handedly destroys the pastor's life. Then again, is Fr. Flynn's compassionate interest in the boys just that – or something far more sinister? By the film's end, the not knowing, the unshakable doubt, is the creepiest of all.
