12 Years a Slave

Director Steve McQueen's third feature film (hot on the heels of acclaimed Hunger and Shame) just won the Toronto International Film Festival's coveted Audience Award. McQueen weaves the true story of Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free man kidnapped and sold into slavery. The unflinching film again pairs McQueen with Michael Fassbender (as malevolent plantation owner Edwin Ebbs) and features a stunning debut performance from Lupita Nyong'o. This one should be considered a must-see for all of humanity.
