Paul Rudd and Seth Rogen in The 40-Year-Old Virgin
While providing equal amounts of moral support and trash-talking to Steve Carrell as the titular naïf (Rogen’s Cal to Carrell’s Andy: “When I first met you, I thought you were a serial killer”), Rudd and Rogen—key members of the Judd Apatow ensemble players—also set their sharp tongues on each other with their hilarious, and apparently improvised, one-upmanship game of “Do You Know How I Know You’re Gay?” (Sample answers includes “Because you macraméd yourself a pair of jean shorts” and “You like Coldplay.”) In a film that brilliantly balances romance and ribaldry, this pair throws some added bite into the recipe.
