Talk about a tangled web of love. Beautiful yet cryptic Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman) wrongly believed her husband, rebel leader Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid), was dead when she embarked upon a mysterious liaison with Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) in wartime Paris. Years later, Ilsa and her decidedly alive husband, who’s being pursued by the Nazis, happen upon Rick, now a smooth, skeptical cool cat who owns the hippest café in Casablanca and who still holds a torch for his beloved Ilsa. As love triangles go, this one’s a tad murky since it turns out Ilsa genuinely seems to dig both dudes. In the end, though, Rick’s feelings for her inspire a newfound selflessness in him and he risks it all to set his amour and rival up with tickets to the U.S. and a life of freedom together. Sigh. Yes, yes, we know, we know: they‘ll always have Paris.
