Bogus: Katie Holmes in Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark

Admittedly, characters, movies or filmmakers dubbed “bogus” don’t necessarily fit the definition of the word, but Katie Holmes’ Kim in Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark is truly a bogus heroine all the way. She lays back and pats poor Bailee Madison on the head every time her character whines about the little bogeymen in their mansion, but then, all of sudden, Kim emerges as her savior. It’s primarily an unjustified change of heart, so the shift is jarring, but Kim bites the dust so hard in the film’s big finish, it’s totally worth the unearned urge to come to Madison’s recuse.
