Peter Jackson and company made the most of a huge advantage: J.R.R. Tolkien’s books were written as a trilogy. Although it was a huge financial gamble, the movie series was likewise conceived and designed as a trilogy, and thus could build towards a magnificent, action-filled concluding film that wrapped up all the storylines in the trilogy, as well as giving each of its major characters satisfying farewells. Will The Hobbit trilogy do the same?
