There have been many adaptations of Gaston Leroux’s novel, but none have had the staying power of the original silent film. In one of horror’s most indelible images, opera singer Christine sneaks up behind her masked kidnapper as he plays a musical composition for her. She snatches the mask away from his face, revealing the Phantom’s hideous visage to the moviegoing audience. Chaney’s effective makeup still makes us recoil in terror, even after nearly a century of horror.
