Enchantment Details

This Indian sexual drama is based upon Theyyam, a traditional folk dance that pays tribute to heroes who have transformed into gods. The film begins as a man living in a rural village commits suicide. After the credits, an enigmatic and beautiful woman dressed in a seductive yellow sari wanders into town looking for her uncle (the suicide). She doesn't know that he is dead. She then begins living in his house and getting involved with different village men. Her first lover is the manly Chandu, a married man. She then sleeps with his friend Chindan, a man from a lower caste. The two fight over her and Chindan loses an ear. She soon grows tired of Chindan and makes love to a peddler, Ummini. Meanwhile, Ambu, a young boy with a crush upon her, quietly observes it all. When the volatile Chandu embarks upon another vengeful rage, it is poor, innocent Ambu who becomes his victim. Not long afterward, the strange woman leaves the town as quietly as she came. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
