The Basics: Buscemi is a scummy paparazzo (just based on the law of averages, shouldn't there be at least a couple of not-scummy celebrity photographers out there? Where's their movie?) who meets homeless Pitt, who in turn meets Britney Spears-alike Lohman and feral casting agent Gershon. And of course Pitt becomes famous through all this because here comes the moral fame falls on the worthy and the unworthy, and the obsessive tabloid culture it feeds is toxic.
What's the Deal? It's hard to slam this for not being as awesomely funny as it could have been when there are so many other crappy comedies being released. But I think the subject matter is on the verge of playing itself out in just about every way, with the exception of excellently funny websites like Defamer. Director Tom DiCillo gets it all pretty much right, even if it's way more difficult to truly laugh along with actual famous people out to skewer themselves than it is when nothing-to-lose outsiders go on the attack. Anyway, I'm quibbling, really, because it's not like DiCillo is this big player anyway. He makes indie films, which is kind of like being a janitor.
Best Bits: A fundraiser called Soap Stars Against STD and Lohman's music video for a song called "Take This Love and Shove It." Sometimes all a movie needs is one or two memorable bits for you to feel like you didn't waste your time. These are them.
Thank You, YouTube, for Helping People Market Their Films: Check out the bit they've posted where Gershon walks into what she thinks is a press junket, and it turns out they want her to do porn. Completely fake, of course, but kinda funny anyway.
Brad Pitt Owes This Director a Cookie Bouquet: He got his movie start working on DiCillo's Johnny Suede back in the early '90s.
