The Bells Details

FULL SYNOPSIS

The play [[Feature~V33823~The Bells~murderbyphone]] (based on the French [[Feature~V162374~Le Juif Polonais~lejuifpolonais]]) was brought to the screen in 1926. [[Performer~P4295~Lionel Barrymore~lionelbarrymore]] plays a merchant who murders a Jewish entrepreneur and appropriates the dead man's fortune. Though no evidence exists to convict him, [[Performer~P4295~Barrymore~lionelbarrymore]] cannot escape his own conscience due to the intervention of a mentalist. Whenever he hears the pealing of church bells, [[Performer~P4295~Barrymore~lionelbarrymore]] is haunted by images of his crime and his victim. Of interest is the appearance of [[Performer~P36942~Boris Karloff~boriskarloff]], in Caligariesque makeup as the mesmerist. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
