The Ballad of the Sad Cafe Details

FULL SYNOPSIS

This first film directorial effort of actor [[Performer~P83894~Simon Callow~simoncallow]] is based on a novel by [[Performer~P318350~Carson McCullers~carsonmccullers]] -- which, in turn, was adapted for the stage by [[Performer~P169262~Edward Albee~edwardalbee]] in 1964. [[Performer~P59206~Vanessa Redgrave~vanessaredgrave]] plays a powerful Southern matriarch who, sequestered in her café/general store, holds her home town in the palm of her hand. [[Performer~P59206~Redgrave~vanessaredgrave]]'s benevolent despotry is threatened by the arrival of her hunchbacked cousin, Cork Hubbert (in the role played on stage by dwarf actor [[Performer~P20627~Michael Dunn~michaeldunn]]), and her jailbird husband [[Performer~P84256~Keith Carradine~keithcarradine]]. Unable to remove this threat to her authority by her usual means, [[Performer~P59206~Redgrave~vanessaredgrave]] is reduced to challenging [[Performer~P84256~Carradine~keithcarradine]] to a bare-knuckle fight! [[Performer~P318350~Carson McCullers~carsonmccullers]]' fascination with the disintegration of the Old South coupled with her preoccupation with the grotesque requires delicate handling (as witness Heart Is a Lonely Hunter). [[Performer~P83894~Callow~simoncallow]] works overtime keeping things controlled and tasteful; unfortunately, this results in a very mannered and stilted production, all too obviously betraying its stage origins. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
