The Basics: Because you can make a documentary about anything, here's one about competitive air guitar. It starts in America, where the main rivalry is between a guy who looks like a member of the Strokes and who calls himself Bjorn Turoque (Crane) and the American champion, a Korean-American actor who goes by the name of C-Diddy (Jung). He wears a red robe and a Hello Kitty backpack as a breastplate. The pair goes to Finland for the World Championships, where, among other qualities, contestants are judged on things like "airness."
What's the Deal? In this movie's favor, it doesn't try to be cooler than its subject matter or paint the competitors as fools. Everyone gets the joke. Meanwhile, I'm glad it exists, because it saves me from ever having to go to some terrible nightclub and watch an air-guitar championship in person. Don't get me wrong — I'm totally pro-air guitar. I'm just lazy, and I hate crowded bars.
Three Rock People and One Non-Rock Person in the Movie: Veruca Salt's Nina Gordon, Queen's Brian May and Tom Morello from Audioslave and Rage Against the Machine. Carson Daly shows up, too.
Where You've Seen C-Diddy Before: If you're a regular viewer of Law & Order: SVU, and by regular viewer I mean "viewer with photographic memory for walk-on actors with three lines and no name" then you've seen him as "Lab Tech" and "Forensics Guy."
Philosophy Behind the Finnish Championship: There is one. Apparently, they take this thing very seriously. They have nothing but disdain for people who treat it comically and do things like wear Hello Kitty backpacks as breastplates. The founders even say it's part of the peace movement and that if you're holding an air guitar you can't hold a gun. Of course, holding an air guitar means your hands are, technically, still free …
