The Movie Watcher - Dave White: Your Man at the Multiplex

Adam & Steve

Movie Info and Showtimes Sep. 16, 2008

Adam & Steve Grade: B+
Who's in It: Craig Chester, Malcolm Gets, Parker Posey, Chris Kattan

The Basics: Two gay guys meet in the late '80s, have disastrous sex, flee the scene and don't meet again until 15 years later. Then they (that's right) fall in love. Look, it could too happen.

What's the Deal? So I have a confession to make. The star of this movie, Craig Chester? The guy who's also the writer and director? He's a good friend of mine. Hi, Craig! I'd give you an A, but my editor is up my butt about being objective. Whatever. (But seriously, it's sweet and light, not too dopey, with the mushy romance bits and funny stuff in all the right places. Go see it.)

Don't Be Late: Because if you are, you'll miss my favorite scene, the opener, in which Parker Posey and C.C. show up at a bar circa 1987. She's in a Shallow Hal fat suit, and he's dressed like a member of Christian Death. Then Animotion's "Obsession" blares from the soundtrack while Gets does a ridiculous dance.

Notable For: Being one of the few movies Chris Kattan has been in in which he gets to be kind of funny as a normal person and not some goony SNL character.

Also Notable For: Being one of the few gay features (perhaps the only) in which both male leads are played by actual openly gay actors. It's kind of a thing in Hollywood, it seems, that gay characters are supposed to be played by straight guys. I have no idea why.

Spot the Wigstock Star: That's cult-famous and slimmed-down drag queen Jackie Beat in the final scene singing a song about, yes, poop.
