For her many contributions to Soviet cinema, screenwriter/director Vera Stroyeva received the honorary title "People's Artist of the Russian Federation." A graduate of the Institute of Theatrical Art in her native Kiev, Stroyeva wrote her first screenplays in 1925. Five years later, she began directing in collaboration with her husband, [[Performer~P237204~Grigori Roshal~grigoryroshal]]. One of their most notable co-productions was Petersburg Nights, an adaptation of a Dostoyevsky novel. She later earned acclaim and popularity for her extravagant and very patriotic musicals and for her film adaptations of popular operas.
