A graduate of the prestigious Yale School of Drama, Tom McCarthy began his show business career in the 1990s, appearing on episodes of shows like [[Feature~V392959~New York Undercover~newyorkundercover[tvseries]]] and [[Feature~V258665~Spin City~spincity[tvseries]]]. He would go on to play the recurring role of Kevin Riley on the series [[Feature~V226994~Boston Public~bostonpublic[tvseries]]] and make notable appearances in films like [[Feature~V214070~Meet the Parents~meettheparents]], [[Feature~V331335~Flags of Our Fathers~flagsofourfathers]], and [[Feature~V317061~Good Night, and Good Luck.~goodnightandgoodluck]] McCarthy's acting career would take a backseat in 2003 when he wrote and directed the critically acclaimed independent film [[Feature~V278973~The Station Agent~thestationagent]]. Proving the film's success was more than beginner's luck, he would go on to write and direct 2007's [[Feature~V360770~The Visitor~thevisitor]], which met with similar praise from critics and audiences alike. In 2009, the writer wrote the story for the Disney Pixar film [[Feature~V402056~Up~up]], which met with tremendous success, both at the box office and in critic's circles, earning McCarthy an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
