Edward Dein Biography

  • Profession: Screenwriter, Director
  • Born: Jan 1, 0001
  • Died: Jan 1, 0001

After starting small with the PRC comedy [[Feature~V3577~Baby Face Morgan~babyfacemorgan]] (1942), American screenwriter Edward Dein signed on with Universal. While working for the "spinning globe" studio, Dein labored away on such "B" horror melodramas as [[Feature~V86497~Calling Dr. Death~callingdrdeath]] (1943), [[Feature~V97440~Jungle Woman~junglewoman]] (1944) and The Cat Creeps (1946). During this period, he moonlighted at Columbia ([[Feature~V111131~Soul of a Monster,~thesoulofamonster]] the "Boston Blackie" films) and RKO. Switching to directing in the 1950s, Dein turned out one of the best (albeit cheapest) red-paranoia thrillers of the era, [[Feature~V43988~Shack Out on 101~shackouton101]] (1955) which he also scripted. His later credits include the curiously effective horror piece [[Feature~V99220~The Leech Woman~theleechwoman]] (1960). Dein's directorial output includes some startlingly good acting performances, notably [[Performer~P46149~Lee Marvin~leemarvin]] in [[Feature~V43988~Shack Out on 101~shackouton101]] and Colleen Gray in Leech Woman. Despite the claims of certain film catalogues, "Edward Dein" is not a pseudonym for Italian filmmaker [[Performer~P107417~Ubaldo Ragona~ubaldoragona]]. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
