Don Chaffey Biography

  • Profession: Director
  • Born: Aug 5, 1907
  • Died: Nov 13, 1990

Beginning in an assistant's post at Britain's Gainsborough Studios in 1944, Don Chaffey was promoted to head of the studio's art direction department within two years. Chaffey made his directorial bow with the award-winning The Mysterious Poacher (1950). On the strength of this one film, he was forever tagged as a "family" or "children's" director, despite occasionally delving into such grown-up fare as [[Feature~V107029~A Question of Adultery~aquestionofadultery]] (1958), [[Feature~V101349~The Man Upstairs~themanupstairs]] (1958), and A Matter of Who (1961). Fans of stop-motion wizard [[Performer~P93588~Ray Harryhausen~rayharryhausen]] will recall Chaffey as the efficient, unobtrusive director of [[Feature~V25902~Jason and the Argonauts~jasonandtheargonauts]] (1963) and [[Feature~V104874~One Million Years B.C.~onemillionyearsbc]] (1967). Hired by [[Performer~P87871~Walt Disney~waltdisney]] to direct 1961's [[Feature~V20927~Greyfriars Bobby~greyfriarsbobby:thetruestoryofadog]] (1960), Chaffey remained a [[Performer~P87871~Disney~waltdisney]] regular into the 1970s, helming the made-for-TV [[Feature~V39184~The Prince and the Pauper~theprinceandthepauper]] (1962) and [[Feature~V23177~Horse Without a Head~thehorsewithoutahead]] (1962), and the theatrical features [[Feature~V49676~Three Lives of Thomasina~thethreelivesofthomasina]] (1963) and [[Feature~V37848~Pete's Dragon~petesdragon]] (1977). Don Chaffey's last projects included the TV movies [[Feature~V8518~Casino~casino]] (1980) and [[Feature~V126516~International Airport~internationalairport]] (1985). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
