Calvin Lockhart Biography

  • Profession: Actor
  • Born: Oct 18, 1934
  • Died: Mar 29, 2007
  • Birth Name: Bert Cooper

Imposing Bahamian actor Calvin Lockhart was at one time an engineering student. Firmly established as a Broadway leading man in the early 1960, Lockhart found that worthwhile opportunities for black performers were severely limited in Hollywood; as a result, he moved to England, where he appeared with regularity in BBC television productions and in such films as [[Feature~V12111~A Dandy in Aspic~adandyinaspic]] (1966) and [[Feature~V97211~Joanna~joanna]] (1968). He returned to the U.S. for the racially supercharged urban drama [[Feature~V94193~Halls of Anger~hallsofanger]] (1970), following this personal triumph with an embarrassing appearance in [[Feature~V34159~Myra Breckinridge~myra]] (1970) and a fascinating turn as the charismatic villain of [[Feature~V11103~Cotton Comes to Harlem~cottoncomestoharlem]] (1972). While he never quite became the "second [[Performer~P106725~Sidney Poitier~sidneypoitier]]" as predicted by movie publicists, Lockhart was directed by [[Performer~P106725~Poitier~sidneypoitier]] in [[Feature~V52001~Uptown Saturday Night~uptownsaturdaynight]] (1974) and [[Feature~V29055~Let's Do It Again~letsdoitagain]] (1975). Calvin Lockhart's TV work has included recurring appearances on the nighttime serial [[Feature~V280661~Dynasty~dynasty[tvseries]]]. Lockhart died on Mar 29, 2007, in the Bahamas, of complications from a stroke, shortly after shooting a supporting role in the Nassau-set family drama [[Feature~V391231~Rain~rain]]. He was 72 years old. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
